Comments: When a tile cracked in my living room, we started a process to determine what happened. I had A Best and two other contractors come and do an analysis and they all agreed that the front of my house had sunk about an 1" from the middle of the house where the tile cracked. It opened up an expansion joint, cracked mortar by a window and in the front of the house and caused a crack up stairs in the ceiling. It also caused a bathroom door to not close. Since this all happened gradually over a period of years it was hard to put it all together. After receiving bids we chose A-Best. They had good reviews, were low bidder and had been around since 1998. The inspector who approved their work told me that the warranty and getting someone you can trust to be around is the most important part of the job since there's always a chance they'll have to come back for adjustments. A Best put in 14 piers made of 1 ft concrete cylinders between 10 and 20ft deep using compressors. This is the standard acceptable method according to the inspector. Then they jacked up the house and shimmed it. It closed the expansion joint on one side, the cracks in the ceiling, and made the bathroom door close again. However, it did open up the expansion joint on the other side. If we had been a little more diligent watching it we probably could have stopped that from happening, but the inspector said that was not unusual and not a problem. I eventually had it resealed and you can't really tell. I used Checkmark Handyman in Sugar Land for that work. My yard has many plants in the front, and they removed all of them. I had some home depot buckets, pots and wheelbarrows that they put them in plus some plastic. When done, they put all the plants back in where they used to be and honestly the only ones who didn't make it were the hibiscus plants (you could see right away that they didn't like being taken out). They started the work on Tuesday before XMas, and had the house level by the time they left Tuesday. They called the inspector who came out Wednesday morning and approved it all. They came back right away and filled all the dirt and plants in and compressed it with a tamper. One sprinkler line broke at a riser, and they came back and repaired it right away. By the end of Wednesday they were gone and my neighbors were all shocked at how quick it happened and how good it looked. The next week I received my final measurements paperwork and after that my lifetime transferable warranty form. Walt was the person I interfaced with and he was always pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. Their price was basically a standard $X/pier times the number of piers. I was very happy with the complete product, from estimate and determination of what to do, to final paperwork. They've been around a while and that's important to your warranty. Highly recommend!
